4 Donor Responses (2/7/06)
They can:
- Decrease their giving
- Stop giving
- Continue giving at their current level
- Increase their giving
We obviously never want our donors to decrease or stop their giving.
Sometimes there are circumstances that are beyond our control. Loss of a donor’s job, pay reduction, increased financial obligations, retirement etc.
But on most occasions we have failed to do one or several of the following:
- Show appreciation for their support
- Stay in touch
The encouraging thing is that each of us certainly has the ability to show appreciation. I believe that our appreciation of others needs to be a life style. It should be a natural response on our part.
Staying in touch ought to be part of who we are. Donors in practice are investors and we need to make them aware of what is taking place with their investment.
If you want to see your donors continue and increase their support you will need to be proactive. It really is our responsibility and privilege.
The fund raiser who is proactive will:
- Constantly share his or her vision
- Challenge his or her donors to increase their giving
Vision excites people. Donors need to buy into your vision but you are the one who needs to articulate that, knowing they can choose to do their part to see the vision realized.
Donors need to be challenged. Far too many individuals and organizations have failed to challenge people on the basis of their capacity to give. It is easier to lump all donors into a neatly organized package and then go on to say, “If everyone would give $25 my dreams could be realized.” Why ask a person for $25 when they can give $500? We need to raise people’s vision.
Far too often we make the assumption that what they gave last year can be repeated next year. Why not challenge those very same people to increase their giving? We need to think capacity!
These 4 donor responses are taking place right within your organization and with your donors. Be proactive and see your ministry far better funded so you can do more kingdom work!
