3 Reasons to Go Back for More Funds (4/18/06)

When do you go back to an existing donor and ask for more funds?

I can think of at least 3 scenarios that offer you the opportunity to go back to a donor and ask them for more funds.

1. When you have a special need or special project

This is usually a good time to reconnect with your donors. People who are highly committed to you are sensitive to special opportunities. The more urgent the need, the better. Committeed donors like to respond to emergencies.

2. When you get information that their capacity to give has changed.

For example, the donor receives a promotion, they have finished putting their kids through college, and their house is paid for.  There are many scenarios that can change the donor’s ability to give. When you sense such a change it very well could be an opportunity to ask for more funds.

3. When your donor signals they could be of further help

Donors who enjoy investing in your ministry will give you signals when they are ready and willing to give more. It might be a simple statement such as, “If I can be of any help in the future do let me know.” Don’t overlook these opportunities to go back for more as you seek needed funds for your ministry.

Be careful not to draw the conclusion that your donors have given all they can give and will never upgrade their giving.  Remember you are not really capable of making that decision. Give your donors the opportunity to respond.

More practical advice from Bill Dillon, President of People Raising, is available in the People Raising 6-hour training program in DVD, Video, CD and MP3 formats.

This award-wining program is designed to reduce the fear factor and time it takes to raise funds.

People Raising - A Practical Guide to Raising Support by Bill Dillon
"This seminar has helped me to see the pass up the mountain and that the paths are climbable with God's help. Also we have heard the fable of the goose that laid the golden egg... You have helped us to see, Bill, that they are not geese, they are people. We need to minister and care for them."
