3 Phrases to Avoid Using (7/18/06)
When it comes to asking for funds, wording is everything. Using the wrong wording can result in a lost opportunity and a loss of needed funds. When asking for funds there are 3 phrases you will want to avoid like a plague....
1. "If you are interested…"
Why ask, "If you are interested"? Assume they are interested. If you have an appointment to ask for funds, why would they even meet with you if they did not have an interest in you and your ministry? Your job is to share the vision the Lord has given you and challenge them to make a financial contribution.
2. "Would you think about it?”
As a fund raiser, your job is to bring people to a decision, not merely have people think about one. How long would you want them to think about it? A month? Six months? No. People have the ability to make an informed decision in a very short period of time. In the case of individuals they need not go to a committee or consult advisors. They simply need to respond to your challenge.
3. "I wonder if you would help?"
The dictionary provides us with this definition of the word wonder: "To be curious or in doubt about".
When you ask for funds, you want to challenge people. As you challenge them, ask for a specific amount or within a range. There ought to be no doubt in a prospect or donor's mind as to what you are asking him or her to do. You don't want people to wonder if they should help; you want people to be committed to give as God leads them to be a part of your team.
Instead of beating around the bush and skirting around the issue, practice asking people. For example—“Would you be one of those people that would support me at $________?
When asking for funds, using the wrong wording can result in a lost opportunity and a loss of needed funds. When using the appropriate words people can be appropriately challenged and given a chance to partner with the exciting ministry the Lord has given you.
