3 Perspectives on Handling the "NO" Response (4/2/07)

As I raise funds, one thing I hate to hear is the word "NO". I am happy to report that I simply do not hear the word, "NO", on a regular basis, because I focus on people that know, trust and care for me. But when I hear that word, "NO", I have found it is important that I put the "NO" into perspective.

There are 3 perspectives on handling the "NO" response.

1. Try to determine why it is a "NO".

Many times there are further questions you need to answer and once answered to your listener's satisfaction, you are well on your way to winning over a donor. All you have to do is ask such questions as:

"Are there any questions I can be answering for you?"
"Is there any other information you need?"

Here is the real advantage of meeting people one on one. Sending a letter simply does not give you the opportunity to ask questions and better determine why they are saying "NO".

2. Don't think that a "NO" today means a "NO" tomorrow.

Even if you can't turn the "NO" into a "YES" recognize that things change. People's income can change, their financial commitments can change. These changes could take place three months, six months, a year later.

You might ask, "When should we have this conversation again?"

3. Recognize a "NO" means you are closer to a "YES".

As I was teaching a People Raising seminar and discussing the "NO" response, this wise and experienced man quickly piped up and said, "But Bill, a "NO" means you are closer to a "YES".

That certainly is a positive attitude. We know God will provide, but in many situations we simply do not know who the Lord will provide. That is why we do not loose heart but consistently put our message in front of people who know, trust and care for us and look for prospects whom we can build a relationship with for our ministry.

These 3 perspectives certainly will keep you on track and avoid the path of discouragement.
