3 Misconceptions Regarding Fund Raising (2/7/08)

It is so easy to keep raising funds and then to find out later we have made some wrong assumptions. There are 3 misconceptions regarding fund raising that are important for us to consider.

1. Once a donor always a donor
If you are like me, you just keep thinking that donors will keep on giving. Nothing is going to stop them. They have been there last month, last year and for the last several years. But their giving is not automatic, it needs to be earned. We need to stay in touch with them and make sure they feel valued and connected. Out of sight out of mind ought to be part of your mode of operation. Failing to value them most certainly will result in the loss of a donor.
2. All donors give monthly
Many of us are creatures of habit. One example in the area of fund raising is to draw the conclusion that all donors give monthly. We just assume all donors are designed to give monthly. Don’t be fooled; some like to give as the spirit leads, some prefer to give to projects from time to time. It is your job to find out how they like to give and pattern your approach to them accordingly.
3. The larger the group the more the funds
I believe many of us are trained to choose those things that are the most practical. In fund raising this can be fatal. For example, “The larger the group the more the funds.” We think we get the biggest group in town and drop our message on them and funds will flow. You will receive far more significant gifts as you cultivate personal contacts and challenge them personally.
