4 Steps to Move Your (4/15/08)

All of us as fund raisers need to be able to count on sustained, regular support. We tend to call it "Pledged Support." But it has been my experience that there are those people who stay away from pledged support and simply give a "special gift" (one time gift) from time to time. There are 4 steps we can take to move them from a special gift donor to a pledged donor.

  1. Thank them for their love and support through their special gifts. You need to come with thankful hearts to those who have showed their love through gifts and prayers. They already have proved to you that you are worthy of their support, but now you want them to take the next step.

  2. Explain how important it is for you to establish a budget on which to operate. It is critical that you be able to find those who would commit financially on a regular and consistent basis (that could be a monthly, quarterly or annual gift). Everyone is used to living on a budget. They do and they would understand that you need to do the same, therefore you need to have people committed to you.

  3. Based upon their capacity to give, I would ask for a specific amount or ask with a range in mind. "Would you be one of the people who would commit $____ (a month, a quarter, on an annual basis)?"

  4. And if they came back and indicate they cannot provide a pledged gift, ask for another special gift.
Your response might be something like, "What you’re telling me is that at this point you cannot commit to a pledged gift. Would you make a special gift at this time of $_____?"

You deserve to be supported and need to have those you can count on. Now it is your job to make contact with those special gift donors and seek to upgrade their giving.

May the Lord bless your efforts.
