4 Way to Collect Valuable Data on Your Prospects and Donors (8/4/08)

If you are to be successful in fund raising, it is critical that you be able to build a relationship with your prospects and donors. One way to do that is to collect personal data. There are 4 ways you can collect valuable data.

  1. Listen

I am amazed how much I learn from listening. People talk about their family, their jobs, and their hobbies. They talk about what they like to give to, when they like to give and how they give. Many times we are more concerned about what we are going to say and fail to listen.

  2. Look

When I walk into a prospect or donors home or office, my eyes take it all in. I am looking for family pictures, awards, plaques- pictures reflecting their interest in hobbies. That in itself allows me to reference those things and engage in conversation. They wouldn’t be displayed if they did not have value to them in the heart of the prospect or donor.

  3. Ask

What information would be of help to you? Ask. You might ask such questions as:

When you choose to give, do you tend to give monthly, quarterly, or annually?

Tell me more about your job.

    What church do you attend?

Simply asking can uncover so much valuable information that will enable you to successfully build a relationship.

  4. Read

In the case of business people, I tend to read the business section of local papers and business journals. That gives me opportunities to know so much more about them.

Try these 4 simple ways to collect data on your prospects and donors and keep on People Raising.
