3 Funding Sources + 1 Principle (11/8/05)
There are at least 3 primary funding sources we can approach as we raise funds but 1 guiding principle. If we are going to be successful it is vitally important that we apply this 1 guiding principle to these 3 sources. The 3 typical and primary sources we turn to are: 1. Individual people 2. Churches 3. Foundations and corporations I use the word "primary" because this certainly is not an exhaustive list of available sources. My main concern is to focus on this 1 guiding principle and to apply it to each of these primary sources. Starting with our first funding source, individual people it has been my experience that the 1 guiding principles is that: - People give to people they know
- People give to people they know and trust
- People give to people they know, trust and care for
With this principle locked into our mind we can take the second funding source churches and in full confidence conclude that: - Churches give to people they know
- Churches give to people they know and trust
- Churches give to people they know, trust and care for
Applying this principal to our third funding resource foundations and corporations we need to be reminded that: - Foundations give to people they know
- Foundations give to people they know and trust
- Foundations give to people they know trust and care for
If this is true, and I can vouch for this after 35 years of fund raising, there are some conclusions which we can draw. They are as follows: - We must not fool ourselves into thinking that individuals, churches, foundations and corporations with which we have no relationship will quickly embrace our cause and instantly support us. It simply is not going to happen with any consistency.
- We need to focus on our web of relationships and ask them to be part of our team. Because they know, trust and care for us they will be more willing to hear our story and respond.
- When we run out of contacts we need to go back to that same web of relationships and have them personally help broaden our base of support.
- When an opportunity comes to be introduced to people, churches, foundations and corporations that neither know, trust or care for us we need to recognize that before we ever ask for a gift we need to take the steps necessary to build that relationship.
Applying this 1 guiding principle will save you time, money, and frustration and put you on a fast track to get those needed funds for ministry. Copyright 2005

"The People Raising video series seminar allowed me to see first hand that raising support was not impossible. Bill ran the seminar in such a way that all of my questions, as well as the ones that I was scared to ask were answered. I now feel confident that I can go out and raise personal support in a timely manner."
